Streets of Shanghai
Group Exhibition - STREET
Noir Dark Rooms, Coburg VIC

The following is a documentary photo series exploring the streets of Shanghai. This city of over 26 million people is diverse and multifaceted, with communist architecture encompassing the back streets and gigantic corporate high-rises planted on the river's edge. This series aims to explore the complexities of modern China where capitalism and traditional party communism co-exist. Parallel to the unprecedented economic developments that China has experienced over the past few decades, particularly in its financial capital Shanghai, has also been slow social progress in areas such as gender equality, media censorship, and social surveillance. ‘Shanghai Streets’ aims to delve into the nuances of a place where economic and social forces are consistently compromising and competing, whilst providing insight into a way of life that is ostensibly far removed from everyday Western narratives.
